Skate 4 CancerSkate 4 Cancer is a perfect example of people being completely selfless and doing something completely wonderful for the world. Rob Dyer, founder of Skate 4 Cancer, is on a mission to educate the world about cancer and stamp it out for good. Following him on his journey and offering tons of support is the best way to help eradicate the disease as much as possible. Rob Dyer was actually 15 when he came up with the general concept of organizing a skate from LA to Toronto. It didn't come to fruition until 2004, when Dyer was 20 years old. The driving motivation was because his mother, 2 grandmothers, and a friend were all diagnosed with cancer. Instead of sitting by the sidelines and giving in, he decided to take matters into his own hands and put his years' long dream into reality. It is incredibly amazing and wonderful that Skate 4 Cancer has had such a huge impact. They have received some press attention, but their biggest following comes from MySpace. There they have a huge number of followers, all bearing the 's4c' initials next to their names. Rob credits these passionate people for helping them get that much closer to their goal. To raise awareness, Skate 4 Cancer skates incredible distances. The highest reported was 100 kilometres! That is incredible dedication that is rare to see in a group with members so young. While many people take a lifetime to figure out what their true passions are, Rob Dyer has found his and is taking it to wonderful extremes. In addition to skating for awareness, there is also a leg of their campaign called 'Cure is Knowledge.' This is all about cancer prevention and getting the education out there to the people. It is surprising and alarming that a huge percentage of cancer cases could have been prevented or halted with the right knowledge in place. Rob is also a proponent of early testing. He hopes that the governments institute mandatory testing for people to catch this disease early on before it can do terrible damage. You'd think that it would take a lot of monetary donations to keep a thing like this going, but Skate 4 Cancer actually doesn't accept any. Instead, they ask that monetary donations be sent to Toronto's Princess Margeret Hospital. If they do receive donations they go directly to that hospital to help those who have cancer. The lack of monetary donations for the group means that it's made up of some incredible people who are giving of both their hearts and their time to keep this thing going. It's things like that that make the world a better place to live in for all of us. While there is currently no cure for cancer, with people like Rob Dyer at the wheel it is only a matter of time before that happens. Skate 4 Cancer is an amazing collection of people young and old who are getting the message out about cancer prevention and education so that tomorrow's future can be a better place.
